Last Friday, Starbucks Philippines’ PR team invited members of Cebu Bloggers Society for the launching of their new blended beverages, food items, and Starbucks card designs which will be available on June 7.
The event started off with a coffee tasting. Alex, a Starbucks partner, gave interesting notes about the Four Fundamentals of brewing a great cup of coffee : proper proportion, accurate grind, quality water and freshness of coffee.
Proper Proportion : The recipe for a great coffee is 2 Tbsp (10 g) of freshly ground coffee for every 6 fl oz (180 mL) of water. Alex said that no matter how much you’re brewing, you have to keep the proportion consistent to achieve an enjoyable cup of coffee
Accurate Grind : The coffee grind size directly affects how much time the grounds are in contact with water. Alex shared that it is important to keep in mind the brewing method you’ll use when choosing a coffee grind. He also pointed out that the the finer the grind, the shorter the brew time.
Water Quality : Water makes up 98% of every cup of coffee. So it’s important that it tastes clean, fresh and free of impurities because it greatly affects the taste of your coffee.
Freshness : Coffee beans must be stored in an airtight container at room temperature if not used. One must always check the coffee’s expiration. Just like fresh produce, coffee beans left in an open bag would easily spoil. It is important to keep it away from oxygen, light, heat and moisture as much as possible.
After the educational talk, we were then asked to brew our own cup of coffee using a French Press. This made the event a lot more interactive and enjoyable. It felt like we were in a chemistry class inside a laboratory room. *Giggle*
Before we began, Alex cited that a French press is very efficient in brewing a great cup of coffee. It uses less electricity, less effort and it captures the full aroma and flavor of the coffee.
After getting our pack of coffee grounds, we poured it on the French press. Then we added hot water.
We waited for four minutes to allow the coffee grounds to steep.
After which, we then pressed the coffee filter. And Viola! We happily poured our cups with freshly brewed Starbucks coffee.
Before downing our coffee, we were asked to first close our eyes, smell the aroma of the brew, take a sip and savor the whole experience. It was truly fun! The coffee was medium bodied and well balanced. Then we were asked to pour coffee over a cup with ice and dip a slice of lemon in it. To a non-coffee fanatic like Gi and I, the idea sounded peculiar but we gave it a try, nonetheless. Surprisingly, the taste of chilled coffee was very pleasing to the senses. It was very refreshing!
After the activity, we were then introduced to Starbucks new and limited edition blended beverages, food items and featured Starbucks cards.
NEW LIMITED EDITION Starbucks Blended Beverages
Summer may have ended for some but Starbucks is giving you another summer story to remember with its NEW Limited Edition blended beverages that give a refreshing and unique twists on the signature flavors of chocolate and tea.
Gi and I are really not coffee drinkers. On lazy afternoons, when we want to relax, slow down and just enjoy each other’s company, we usually grab a slice of cake and pair it with tea. So we were delighted to know that Starbucks new blended beverages are coffee-free.
Flavors that are a pleasurable combination of thirst-quenching tea and decadent rich chocolate. What’s not to love?
Starbucks new Chocolate Black Tea with Earl Grey Jelly Frappuccino comes in captivating flavors and textures. It starts with a layer of aromatic Earl Grey Tea jelly then topped with a smooth Black Tea Frappuccino with chocolate java chips. Whipped cream and a sprinkle of chocolate Black Tea powder are then added for a delicious finish. (Tall – P180; Grande – P190; Venti – P200)
Meanwhile, Starbucks Double Chocolate Green Tea Frappuccino is a pleasant mixture of Matcha Green tea infused with crunchy java chips. The beverage is layered with a smooth chocolate sauce at the top and bottom of the cup. To finish, it’s topped with whipped cream and a light dusting of Green Tea powder is added. (Tall – P175; Grande – P185; Venti – P195)
NEW Starbucks Food Items
To complement Starbucks’ refreshing beverages, they have also introduced new food items for a total gastronomic experience : Purple Yam Cheesecake with red mung bean and macapuno, Chicken Milk Bun, Chicken Parmigiana Wrap, and Sausage and Spinach on Foccacia Bread. Starbucks also introduced new core food items such as the breakfast pancakes which go perfectly with your coffee and Go Lite! Chips which are great for your afternoon snack cravings.
Purple Yam Cheesecake (P140/slice ; P1550 whole) – It’s a smooth and light cheesecake swirled with purple yam, red mung bean and macapuno. The interplay of textures of this indulgent dessert is really pleasing to the palate.
Sausage and Spinach on Focaccia Bread (P175) – It’s a crusty and soft bread filled with creamy spinach and sliced Italian sausage. Another scrumptious option to pair with your coffee. This is best when served warm.
Chicken Milk Bun (P75) – Soft and savory. This toasty milk bun is filled with smoked sesame chicken fillet. It’s then topped with sweet cookie crumbs, adding sweetness and texture to the bun. Best served warm, this is a great pair to your morning coffee.
Chicken Parmigiana Wrap (P165) – This is a tortilla wrap filled with baked chicken fillet, parmesan and mozzarella cheese, roasted eggplant in pomodoro sauce. This delicious wrap is pleasantly filling.
Breakfast Pancakes (P95) – Three light and fluffy pancakes served with maple-flavored syrup, butter and jam. This is a perfect meal to start your busy day and a great pair to your warm cup of coffee.

It was The Lifeaholics first time to attend Starbucks launch of new featured beverages, food items and cards. It was an amazing experience! We learned a lot from the educational coffee tasting and it made me appreciate more the brewing process of each cup of coffee.
